COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS

Comprehensive psychological assessments are able to provide an in-depth understanding of one's style of thinking, learning, responding to the environment, and relating to others. We will work with you to determine the most useful assessment options to fit your needs and answer the key questions you have for you or your child.

Common reasons that lead people to seek a psychological assessment include:

  • Identifying giftedness
  • Identifying intellectual disability
  • Wanting a better understanding of how a person thinks and learns
  • Identifying specific learning disabilities
  • Identifying and classifying specific mental health concerns
  • Wanting a better understanding of one's personality patterns (styles of relating to others)
  • Wanting a better understanding of their child or teenager's behaviour patterns and/or social challenges

Because the reasons for seeking a psychological assessment are varied, tailored assessment services can also vary considerably between clients. If you’re in doubt about the type of assessment that you or your child is needing, it is advisable to book an initial assessment interview to talk through the reasons for seeking an assessment and the specific questions that you have.  From there, an individualised quote can be provided for a comprehensive assessment that directly targets your identified needs.  Alternatively, you are welcome to send through a brief summary of your reasons for seeking an assessment, and some options and an estimate of costs can be provided by e-mail for your consideration.

For those preferring a standard assessment package, the options and costs are listed below.

COGNITIVE ASSESSMENT

$950

Cognitive assessments as a stand-alone assessment are most commonly used for identifying giftedness or intellectual disability.  A cognitive assessment is also able to provide an analysis of intellectual strengths and weaknesses across various domains.

The Wechsler cognitive assessments are used to assess clients between the ages of 2 ½ and 90 (the specific tests used are the WISC, WPPSI, or WAIS, depending on the client’s age).  Cognitive assessment results are statistically normed, and results are reported in a way that allows a direct comparison of a client's performance in comparison to others of the same age. In most cases, a cognitive assessment is able to provide a measurement of one’s full-scale IQ (intelligence quotient). Other index scales that are reported include the verbal comprehension index, visual-spatial reasoning index, fluid reasoning index, working memory index, and processing speed index. The fee for a cognitive assessment includes 1-2 hours of 1:1 assessment, materials and test license fees, analysis of results, and a thorough report explaining the findings.

COGNITIVE AND EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT

$1950

A cognitive assessment alone provides a picture of a client’s overall cognitive capabilities, regarding thinking, learning, and reasoning.  An educational assessment provides specific learning data.  Results from an educational assessment will show a client’s strengths and weaknesses across a variety of academic areas (e.g. listening comprehension, reading fluency, reading comprehension, maths fluency, and maths problem solving.)

When combined with a cognitive assessment, the results of an educational assessment are used to identify specific learning disabilities.  An educational assessment can also be useful for gifted learners, in order to identify their levels of achievement across different subject areas.  This helps to guide schools and parents to ensure that learning is targeted at the right level, to reduce boredom or frustration.

The Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III) is used for a learning assessment. This is available for clients between the ages of 4-50. The fee for the Cognitive and Educational Assessment covers individual testing time (ranging from 2-4 hours), materials and test license fees, analysis of results, and a comprehensive assessment report.

MENTAL HEALTH AND BEHAVIOURAL ASSESSMENTS

POA

Assessments are also available for clients of all ages experiencing mental health challenges, and for children and young people demonstrating challenging behaviour.  These assessments are tailored to the individual needs of the client.  In order to provide an accurate and comprehensive assessment, data collection methods may include interviews, psychometrics, and in some cases, observation sessions.

Due to the more complex nature of mental health and behavioural assessments, an individual interview (with the client and/or parents) is required as the first step in the process.

ASESSMENT INTERVIEWS

$225

An initial assessment interview is recommended with any assessment and is required for mental health and behavioural assessments.  The purpose of this interview is to clearly identify the needs and questions that are motivating the client or family to seek out an assessment. The interview is also used to gather as much information as possible about the client, their developmental history, life experiences, and current strengths and challenges. Beginning the assessment process with this interview helps to ensure that the results of psychometric assessments are correctly interpreted, within a full understanding of the client's context.

For more complex assessments, follow-up interviews may also be needed.  For example, for some children or young people, an initial interview is conducted with the parents, and a follow-up interview/s with the child or young person is needed later.

An assessment interview is 50 minutes in length. In most cases, after an initial interview, options and pricing for further assessment will be provided by e-mail.

FOLLOW-UP SESSION

$225

Following a psychological assessment, a comprehensive report is provided, which describes and explains the assessment findings, with the aim of answering the questions that were identified in the initial referral.  For many clients, a follow-up session is a helpful way of processing this information. A follow-up session provides the opportunity to discuss the assessment findings and recommendations and address any lingering questions.

The fee for this service includes a single, 50-minute follow-up session. Additional sessions may be booked by negotiation.

TRAVEL TIME

In some instances, an assessment may be arranged in an out-of-office location, such as a school or community centre. Travel away from the office is charged at $112.50 per hour.
